Job
« on: September 17, 2010, 11:16:05 AM »

Today I was given a job at very short noice (less than 2 hours).  It's only for 3 weeks to cover someone who's on holiday but it's an admin job that I know I'll enjoy.

Thank you.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow even though it's going to be busy.

I was informed yesterday that my job is now on-going.[1]  It also means that I'll be able to spend more time here as I don't need to spend my evenings job hunting.

[1] As I understand it, an "on-going" contract is one where you are hired for as long as the job exists (which they believe is for the forseeable future) but, as you have been warned that the job may go, you don't get any redundancy pay if the job goes. Essentially, you are legally a temporary employee but you can get a mortgage, make long term plans, etc.

Good for you! The crappiest thing about being a temp is that you never know what your day will look like (I think), so I guess this is better?

If you're on an ongoing contract you're treated more or less as a permament member of staff.  However, if the company needs to shed jobs, they can get rid of yours without giving you any redundancy pay.
