I saw it twice and enjoyed it both times, although the insect character bothers me, the vocalizations for it don’t match to my thinking. Nonetheless, it has some great jokes and some pretty cool effects. It’s not Coraline though!

I actually watched this with my 2 year old. It was the first movie she had ever seen, and she actually sat through the whole thing (but that might have something to do with the huge bucket of popcorn).

It was a fun, enjoyable movie. Definitely not as heartfelt as some other recent animated movies, and like you said, I never had that feeling of awe. But it’s still solid.

The title is a little misleading. There’s basically one alien and they don’t fight him until the end.
