…I’ve always said that. My taste in music and movies has always skewed to much older times.
And then there’s movie stars. Brad Pitt? Uh, no, honey. As far as I’m concerned, they just don’t make ‘em like they used to…(there is one exception here in my list of Classic Hunks of the Past, and he’s only here because he’s harkening to someone else!)
After I brought up the Christopher Lee thing on another thread it got me thinking about actors, and I realized that all of my favorite actors are either dead or were in their prime fifty or more years ago…
Here are some of my all time faves, shared primarily based on my personal ‘hotness’ factor. They also happened to be PHENOMENALLY talented- every single one of them- but that’s just a bonus.
When one reader, Sarah, mentioned that her first knowledge of Christopher Lee was as Saruman, I thought- Oh my! What about his long distinguished career as a horror actor (Dracula no less) and as Sherlock Holmes?
Okay, why I love Chris Lee- first off, the guy is 6’6″ tall. (For a six foot tall woman like meself, that automatically gets him some points, can’t help it. As a side note- in his day, that would have been like being 7’9″). He’s part Italian royalty or something, too. Points there. But it’s the eyes. The cheekbones. Intense. And actually most of the leading men I love all share that in common.

Sean Connery. Do I have to REALLY say much here? Everyone knows he’s hot. End of story.

Errol Flynn. I look at pictures of Errol Flynn or watch his movies and I actually giggle. These are sixty year old pictures and films, but they still make me feel swirly. ^_^
Two key words about Errol Flynn:

The Smile. The Dimples.

Errol Flynn- the original Strider.
Brando. Okay, now you younglings are all thinking about Superman, or Godfather, or one of those later movies where he was really heavy and talked like a cartoon character. Okay. That’s a different Brando than the original Brando. Like old and young Elvis.
This is the Brando I’m talkin’ about:

AKA- Yummy Brando. If any of you ever read Talismen Return of the Exile…psst… ‘Ollie’ was Brando in ginger hair. Hee hee hee….

Gene Kelly. I adore Gene Kelly. Unlike most of my antique hunk collection here, Gene was a very small man, perhaps 5’5″… probably not that tall. He made dancing masculine and sexy.

Singin’ in the Rain is one of my very favoritist movies. The rain sequence is as close to ‘undiluted joy’ as anything ever put on film.

Lord Lawrence Olivier. To me, this is a face that is about as close to classic artistic perfection as you can get. Symmetry, large eyes, cheekbones, not to mention a booty-crack chin which is extra credit, of course.
Okay here is an interesting thing that I haven’t heard anyone else mention…

Ewan McGregor channels Lord Olivier!

He DOES!!! Look at him!!
So points for the young Scottish lad, and for that, he gets onto my Classic Hunks of the Past list.

May I direct you to the young Albert Finney: http://www.chrisbeetles.com/img/pictures/artists/Snowdon/C25054-b.jpg
There’s a reason he and Ewan McGregor were cast in Big Fish together.

Your pick on actors here was very good–I haven’t seen all of their movies yet, but that’s ’cause I don’t have them. (not because I lack the interest.) But at least I know them and I have great respect for the older actors…I can’t help it, it’s true that “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.” =/

Connery, yuck! Errol Flynn….YUMMY. Original Robin Hood, FTW. Singing in the Rain is one of my favorite movies of all time. :3

Never been a Sean Connery or a Gene Kelly girl.
But I could never resist Errol Flynn or Lawrence Olivier (and why would you want to?) But I had two real heartthrobs as a young woman: young Jimmy Stewart, and Humphrey Bogart. Also, I think Gary Cooper in “Mr Deeds Goes to Town” redefined adorable.
And the women were better looking and had more class (at least on screen), back then, too. Grace Kelly, Jean Arthur, Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, etc…

the first shot of errol flynn could be cary elwes in the princess bride…and
hans matheson is another scottish hottie who’s charm and grace are on equal footing with any of the above – thanks for the pics, i am surprised by sean connery and marlon brando’s prettiness during their youth!

I do agree that some of the hottest stars were from the golden age of film but I thought I was the only one who wishes Gene Kelly was hot.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:46 am
I sorry I left wishes in there, I had originally planned to say that I wished Gene Kelly was still alive, young, and single.

lmao it seems we are allowing you too much free time to be contemplating all these hotties of yesteryear… *cracks the whip* Back to work! I demand artses to oggle! XD

What about Charlton Heston? He will always be one of my faves…
September 9th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Oh, my, you sure can pick ‘em.
Marlon Brando was VERY sexy-suave in Guys and Dolls! And the singing voice they gave him…

I was (and still am, deep inside) completely in love with Gene Kelly growing up. I love Fred Astaire, but as far as looks go, Gene Kelly and Van Johnson are dreamy…

Have you seen the 1920′s silent movie “Wings”? Lovely film, and I think you might enjoy watching the male leads, both quite easy on the eyes.

I…love you. D:
I have never met anyone (except this one teacher of mine) with similar taste in actors!
By the way – Gene Kelly was about 5’7″ XD
I know I am not taller than him.
Hehe, I really do love how much you and I have in common when it comes to actors we like! That never happens! Half the people I know, haven’t hear of half the people on the list! And it makes me sad.
I have favorites from all the way back in the Golden Oldies.

I can’t see today’s update for some reason. It is not showing up above the comments.
I have to admit that I have been an Flynn fan ever since I was seven years old and saw him swinging from artistically fake vines in Robin hood.
I think Patrick Stewart needs to be on someone’s hottie list. After all, the masterful appearance and sophisticated accent outweigh the bald head.

Gene Kelly might have SAID he was 5’7″ but – NO. If you see him in Summer Stock with Judy Garland, you will see what I mean. Teeny weeny 4’10″ Judy wasn’t that much shorter than he was!! Seriously. But yeah- he was just the bees knees whatever height! If you are clueless, click my name to see what us Gene Kelly girls are talking about. Gene Kelly- American in Paris. Wowsa. Just wowsa. (I got this thing for broad shoulders you see…and I’m not even gonna TALK about his butt here. Oh… my.)
FWIW, this is my list of hunks of the past. So Patrick Stewart would fall under current guys-
I may need to compile a list of my favorite current actors…
