A lot of folks have commented on the intent gaze of baby Claudius and how odd that is for an infant. That may be true that it’s odd, but certainly not impossible. You see, there was a certain baby I had the privilege of knowing who came into this world sixteen years ago. He had a look like that in his eye from day one. At the time, I didn’t realize how unusual it was for a newborn to make steady eye contact because he was my first child; I assumed that they all looked around like that. As he got older, this ‘focused gaze’ just became even more striking.
Of course now at sixteen, hunched over a guitar with long shaggy hair in his eyes all the time, this intense look of my son’s is temporarily hidden, but I know it’s still there.
See, unlike a lot of comic artists, I have first hand experience on drawing babies. Lots of reference sketches.
See y’all Monday.
